Hacienda La Puente School Board Member
Named to State Science Curriculum Review Panel

Dr. Joseph Chang, a member of the Hacienda La Puente Unified

School District Board of Education, has been appointed by the State

Board of Education to serve as a member of the science content

review panel to evaluate instructional materials to be used in California

public schools.

This summer, Dr. Chang will join the five-member panel in

Sacramento, where members will review science textbooks and other

instructional materials to ensure that they meet State Board-adopted

criteria and that content of materials is accurate and based on current

and proven research.

“As a member of an elite group of the state’s top scientists and

scholars, Dr. Chang’s appointment to this prestigious panel isa

testament not only to his strong academic background and extensive

experience in industry, but also to his leadership in and dedication to

public education over the years,” said John Kramar, superintendent of

the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District. “

In addition to serving on the Hacienda Board of Education since

1993, Dr. Chang is employed as a task manager for Safety and Risk

Management at the Parsons Infrastructure and Technology Group,

Inc.,a leading international engineering and construction firm based

in Pasadena.

He is also an assistant professor in the Computer Science

Department at Cal Poly Pomona. Dr. Chang is a former faculty member

at Cal State Los Angeles and Pasadena City College.

A native of Taiwan, he taught science at Hsin-Shz Elementary

School on Matsu Island after receiving his BS in Mathematics from

National Taiwan University. Later, he

earned an MS in Applied Mathematics from the University of South

Carolina and an MS in Nuclear Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering

Sciences from Northwestern University.

A resident of Hacienda Heights for 22 years, Dr. Chang has a

long-standing

interest in improving science education in local public schools. “At the

end of this century, science and technology is changing at an ever-

accelerating rate. I am committed

to raising the level of science instruction for our students, so that they

will be able to

compete in fast-growing global technology fields, and march

confidently into the 21stCentury,” Dr. Chang said.
